My 35-year career in international business combined with my commitment to service have prepared me to be careful listener and thoughtful contributor to solving the challenges facing Granville County. I am not driven by a single issue or ideology. I will collaborate with my fellow commissioners, seek out the quality advice from staff and experts, and make decisions that yield the best results for all residents and businesses in Granville County.
  • Economic development underlies every other improvement we hope to make as a county. The benefits of economic development must not be restricted to just one segment of our community -- it needs to serve the needs of all residents. This means better employment opportunities closer to home, and new industrial business that accept responsibility for creating and maintaining a healthy environment . With more commercial and industrial property contributing to the tax base, we can have better educational and health outcomes without pressuring current and future residents with higher taxes.
  • Quality public schools are a critical component of our county's competitiveness. Children entering our schools in the next ten years have the potential to live productive lives into the 22nd century. Let's give them schools that lift them up and strengthen them for a future we can only try to imagine.
  • Improved health outcomes for all of our residents is a longterm, multi-generational concern. We need to continue to develop an economic environment where people can afford to access the care they need for themselves and their families. We need to attract and retain healthcare providers in the county so that residents don't need to travel far from home to receive care.
I am very interested in seeking a balance among the competing interests of land use, infrastructure, community development, and preservation. Increasing pressures brought by an influx of new residents mean we only get one chance to define the character of our community for the future. A commercial or residential development built today will last 100 years. We need to use every resource available to ensure that we build the right stuff in the right place to create a landscape which we are all proud to call home.
Three things are needed to be successful at any project. You need to have goal-focused motivation, the know-how, and the tools. I cannot claim to know all the goals today, or to have the knowledge on every topic, or have a ready solution for every problem. I do have the open mind to hear other people's needs and to define objectives. I have the humility to ask experts to share their knowledge and to fill in the gaps in my understanding. And I am prepared to collaborate with my colleagues to acquire the tools we need to do the work. Through my tenure as commissioner, I commit to being motivated everyday to deliver the best solutions for all residents.
Local government is where the hard work of governing gets done. We can't consider ourselves to be a successful society if we aren't constantly confronting the challenges and embracing the opportunities which lead to healthier and more fulfilling lives for our families and our neighbors. I expect county commissioners to measure every decision on how it will move us toward higher educational attainment for our children, less violence and fewer threats to our safety, and better health outcomes for all of our residents. Every commissioner needs to act selflessly, with integrity, and with a thoughtful and caring respect for the diversity of opinion and experience of their peers and all those who live and work in the county.
