2014
Hughes' campaign website listed his themes for 2014:
“ | 1. Our Students Our top priority must be providing every student with a world-class education that prepares them for college, careers or other post-secondary opportunities, including vocational training. As a member of the Durham School Board, I will work to (1) reduce suspensions, (2) close the achievement gap, (3) decrease the dropout rate and (4) ensure that our classrooms and schools are labs of creativity and innovation that prepare our young people for today's ever-changing and increasingly competitive global society. 2. Support Our Teachers We must demonstrate our respect for teachers by: (1) providing them with the resources they need to be effective in their classrooms, (2) raising pay for all teachers and not just a select few, and (3) fighting budget cuts to public education being passed down by the state legislature. 3. Fiscal Oversight Balancing the school system's priorities and desires can be challenging, but the school board has to provide leadership and vision in role in order to ensure that the school system meets its fiduciary responsibility to taxpayers while also achieving academic goals and supporting teachers and other school personnel. |
