Donald Ashmanskas was a federal magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the District of Oregon. He was appointed to this position on September 24, 1992.[1] Judge Ashmanskas passed away at age 75 on July 18th, 2011 after 19 years of service as a Federal Magistrate Judge.[2]

Biography and Education

Judge Ashmanskas was born in Boston, Massachusetts on August 26, 1935. He served in the Marines from 1954 to 1957. He then attended Boston College, the University of Maine, and Rutgers University before receiving his B.A. degree in 1960. He earned his J.D. degree from the New York University School of Law in 1966. He has also done some postgraduate work at Cornell University and the National Judicial College.[1]

Career

Prior to receiving his law degree, Donald Ashmanskas worked as a Revenue Officer for the U.S. Treasury Department and then as an editor for Commerce Clearing House, Inc. In 1966, he became an Assistant Professor at the University of Oregon. Two years later, he joined the League of Oregon Cities as a legal counselor & field consultant. He then worked as a Beaverton City Attorney from 1970 to 1975. In 1975, he became a judge, serving on the Washington County District Court (20th Judicial District) until 1977, when he was promoted to the Washington County Circuit Court. He served on this court until he was appointed magistrate in 1992.[1]
