Donald Johnston

Donald A. Johnston was the chief judge for the 17th Circuit Court (Civil/Criminal Division) in Kent County, Michigan. He served on the court since January 1, 1989. He became the chief judge (by appointment from the state Supreme Court) on January 1, 2010 and retired on December 31, 2018.[1][2][3]
Education
Johnston received his B.A. degree from the University of Virginia in 1966 and his J.D. degree from Wayne State University Law School in 1969.[4]
Career
After law school, Judge Johnston worked for the Kent County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. He eventually worked his way up in this office from law clerk to Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney. He was appointed judge of the 61st District Court in Grand Rapids by Governor William G. Millike on Feb. 19, 1979 and was subsequently elected to six-year terms on that Court in 1980 and 1986. He served as the Chief Judge Pro Tempore in 1979, and as Chief Judge in 1981, 1982-3, 1984-5, 1986-7 and 1988-9. He was then elected to the Kent County Circuit Court in 1988.Cite error: Closing </ref>
