Donald McFarlane is a father, husband, and graduate Electrical Engineer, who has trained in the fields of information security, risk management, and incident/emergency management.  He works as an information security expert with nearly three decades of experience as a leader.  He spent a decade serving as a volunteer EMT and EMS chief, and serves on the planning board and budget committee in the town of Orange.

A resident of Orange since 2008, Donald is running for state rep for Grafton County’s District 18 because he wants to make sure that New Hampshire remains a place where families can live, learn, and thrive for generations to come.

Donald grew up splitting his time between the UK and USA, and became a permanent resident in 1995 after completing his studies and military service.  He achieved his dream in 2002 of becoming a US citizen and has been giving back to his community ever since. Donald and his wife Karen have been married since 2012 and have a rambunctious six year old son named Cameron and a Shetland sheepdog named Neep.

KEY ENDORSEMENTS

Governor Chris Sununu endorses Donald, saying, “Donald McFarlane has my support for State Representative. Donald opposes a sales and income tax, will work hard to protect our New Hampshire Advantage, and wants parents to be able to choose the educational path that is best for their children. I urge everyone to vote for Donald.”

The NRA endorses Donald, and gave him an “A” rating.

The NHLA endorses Donald.
  • On Abortion/IVF:

Donald believes that choosing to terminate a pregnancy is a profoundly personal choice, which may involve religious beliefs and medical considerations. Although he believes that life begins at conception and should be protected, Donald also believes that it is not the province of government to legislate all of this. Today in NH, abortion is legal through 6 months for any reason, and until birth in circumstances such as risk to the mother. Donald will oppose attempts to lower the gestational age of the restrictions and will oppose attempts to block access to IVF or to contraceptives.

That said, Donald does not believe tax dollars should be allocated to fund a choice that goes against the moral fiber of so many Americans.
  • Donald stands for: Lower Cost of Living — No sales tax or income tax. A responsible and balanced budget in Concord. Energy policies which are realistic, focused on achievable goals, and fiscally prudent. In particular, Donald will focus on incentivizing longer-term decision-making, stable pricing, and a level playing field without subsidies for favored solutions. Educational Quality & Opportunities — Donald believes that our education system is key to our society’s future and respects parents’ rights to make decisions regarding their children’s education. Donald is a member of the School District Governance Association of NH and is committed to improving the educational quality and outcomes across the state.
  • Donald stands for: Freedom & the 2nd Amendment.  Donald is for a constitutional, limited government.  He will defend individual freedoms, including our right to keep and bear arms in defense of ourselves, our families, our property and our state. Immigration & the Rule of Law. We are a nation of immigrants. As a legal immigrant to this nation, Donald believes that legal immigration is a strong beneficial influence on America’s success. Illegal immigrants and fraudulent asylum seekers and those aiding and harboring them should be prosecuted using existing law, and should not be afforded preference over American citizens, veterans, and those waiting to come here lawfully.
I do not want to see families in New Hampshire being priced out of the state by rising costs of living - housing, food, electricity, fuel, taxes, etc. We need to work hard to keep taxes and inflation low and protect against government overreach. I am committed to fighting rising energy costs, improving education quality and options, and protecting our freedoms, including the 2nd Amendment.
Elected representatives should represent their whole constituency and not merely their base. They should act thoughtfully based on principles and not based on dogma. A long-term outlook to make the right choices for their communities and constituency for the future, and not merely for the next election, is essential to good legislation.

Donald McFarlane is a father, husband, aspiring farmer, retired volunteer EMT and EMS chief, and information security expert with nearly three decades of experience as a leader. Donald currently serves on the planning board in the town of Orange. A resident of Orange since 2008, Donald grew up splitting his time between the UK and the USA. He became a permanent resident in 1995, and achieved his dream of becoming a US citizen in 2002 after completing his studies and military service.

Donald and his wife Karen have been married since 2012 when she joined him in Orange. They have a rambunctious 4 year old son named Cameron who has probably waved hello to you if you’ve seen him out and about, and a Sheltie named Neep who is always up for attention. Karen is a stay-at-home mother who feels she is never home as she has split her time these past few years assisting at her son's preschool; volunteering at the Friends of Mascoma food pantry in Canaan; and acting as Orange’s town welfare officer. Prior to her move here she worked in finance.

Donald holds a B.Eng. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He has also earned various professional certifications and completed trainings in the fields of information security, risk management, and incident/emergency management.

Donald is running for the New Hampshire House of Representatives because he wants to make sure that New Hampshire remains a place where families can live, educate and thrive.
  • I will work to lower taxes and to combat inflation. New Hampshire citizens are struggling with sky-high pricing for essentials like food, fuel, electricity and pharmaceuticals. We need to increase energy production and encourage more strategic decision-making by the utilities.
  • Our education system is key to our society’s future. I will promote the best educational opportunities for our children, including expanding parental rights to make decisions regarding their children’s education, and working to improve the quality of education across the state.
  • I will protect and uphold all our constitutional rights and freedoms, including the 2nd Amendment. All persons have the right to keep and bear arms in defense of themselves, their families, their property and the state.
I do not want to see families in New Hampshire being priced out of the state by rising costs of living - housing, food, electricity, fuel, taxes, etc. We need to work hard to keep taxes and inflation low and protect against government overreach. Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in New Hampshire

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
