Following his election as the 45th President of the United States in 2016, Donald Trump and his transition team considered individuals to fill the position of Secretary of Homeland Security. The secretary of homeland security oversees the department's mission, which is to "prevent terrorism and enhance security; secure and manage our borders; enforce and administer our immigration laws; safeguard and secure cyberspace; and ensure resilience to disasters."[1] Retired Gen. John Kelly was nominated for the position on December 12, 2016, and confirmed on January 20, 2017. Kelly left his position on July 28, 2017, to become Trump's chief of staff.
