Hi, I’m Donna Griffin, candidate for HD 88

After an 18-year career as a local journalist and 25 years as a teacher in El Paso, Texas and Indianapolis Public Schools, I am running for Indiana House District 88 for two reasons: To address inequities and lack of innovation in education policy in Indiana by listening, supporting, and celebrating Indiana’s teachers.

To represent Hamilton, Hancock, Madison, and Marion county citizens of diverse ages, races and perspectives.

I am an adjunct professor at Butler University, a substitute teacher in Hancock County and an independent author and media creator. I have either lived or worked in all four counties of District 88.

My husband and I live in Buck Creek Township in Hancock County. We have a daughter and son-law who live in Marion County, a son and daughter-in-law who live in Bloomington, and four grandchildren. Our oldest daughter was killed by a reckless driver in 2006 at age 23. She is the inspiration for the non-profit we founded in 2009, Dani’s Dreams Innovation in Education that has two outdoor education trails at Zion Lutheran School and Sugar Creek Township Park.

  • House District 88 is at a crossroads with economic growth that means increased needs for infrastructure, health care, public safety, and education. People are working hard to provide for their families and contribute to their communities. They deserve a representative who shares their day-to-day concerns, for safe communities and managed commercial development where essential workers, in healthcare, public safety, and education know they are respected and supported.
  • They deserve thriving small businesses and students who gain knowledge of both the freedom and responsibilities of citizenship through education, recreation, and quality-of-life programs.” I will be crisscrossing House District 88 to listen to citizens and discuss their needs and the issues that matter most to them.
  • WHAT makes me different? I have a diversity of career experiences: 1) a wealth of knowledge and understanding of this state and its political institutions through 18 years as a local reporter in Hamilton, Hancock, and Marion counties and as an editor/owner for the Pendleton Times and Times-Post in Madison County; 2) a depth of experience in education as a classroom teacher of diverse students at the high school and college level in El Paso, Texas and Indianapolis Public Schools for 25 years. Also I am a woman My research says if I’m elected, I’ll be the first to serve as State Rep for HD 88. In Indiana, about 21% of the General Assembly are women in a state where 50 percent of the population are female.
Education and Innovation all start with TEACHERS! My campaign focus is listening to, supporting, and celebrating teachers. I believe education in Indiana is in crisis and our children’s best hope is to empower teachers to be agents of change.

AND as a teacher for the last 25 years, our focus is on our students - they come first! Students need to be in-person but they also need to be interacting with their teachers and fellow students and developing fundamental skills in language arts, social studies, and STEM through hands-on practice. Teachers should be able to focus on their students and learning IN THE CLASSROOM - not on collecting data, filling out paperwork, and preparing for standardized tests.

Teachers were already stressed to the breaking point BEFORE the pandemic. Yet they made a superhuman turnaround when schools were closed down - without preparation, equipment, technology, and any direction, they did what teachers do best - they found a way and provided one of the few “normal” connections for young people across the globe.

Calls for a return to school and normalcy during the pandemic ignored the fact that there was no going back and that very few teachers wanted to return to a situation where they were unpaid, unfairly evaluated, blamed, and judged for results and issues outside of their control.

Now is the time to come together and move forward with teachers leading the way to make education better and more equitable for everyone.
