Candidate Connection

Donna McLeod participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on May 18, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Donna McLeod's responses follow below.[6]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

HEALTHCARE -Expand Medicaid: To ensure that our families, friends and neighbors have access to good healthcare. No one should be burdened by overwhelming medical bills or forced to actually choose between buying either food or life-saving medication. Fight Addictions to opioids and other substances and ensure that people with pre-existing medical conditions have access to affordable healthcare. EDUCATION-Fully fund public education from pre-kindergarten through high school. Restore HOPE Scholarships to 100 percent in order to give everyone the peace of mind of knowing that continually rising costs will not keep their children from getting a good basic education. TRANSPORTATION-Expand bus service and include light/heavy rail to Gwinnett County. We must significantly reduce traffic congestion in order to increase productivity and ease frustration among daily commuters and greatly expand opportunities for job seekers.[7][8]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

The power of the vote in a representative democracy: In 2008, we saw our highest turnout in a presidential election -- approximately 63 percent; this is not a passing grade. Our turnout in midterm elections is about 37 percent; and in local city elections, it is dismal. We need to ensure that voting is made easier and we must secure the vote by providing a paper trail. Our country’s success depends on us all participating, and we must ensure that district boundary lines are drawn to give people fair and accurate representation.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[8]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Donna McLeod answered the following:

What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?

My strong proven leadership abilities which I have demonstrated in Corporate America for over two (2) decades as a Manager/Supervisor and most recently in the ownership of my own small business allows me to look at issues from a root cause point of view. I think these experiences will allow me to serve the people I seek to represent. I have been active civically in my community and I am currently the President of a nonprofit organization, CANI, Inc., (Community Action Network Initiatives). Our mission is to; initiate grassroots activities to promote civic engagement and life coaching techniques for advancing the community[8]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To serve the people, not self intertest or lobbyist. We must support public policies that reflect the needs and welfare of our districts, cities, county, state and county[8]
What legacy would you like to leave?
That I tried to do the most good while I was here.[8]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
My first job was to bus tables at Ponderosa Steak House. I spent two (2) years and when I left I was a hostess.[8]
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
I believe it’s beneficial to build relationship with other legislators because different voices and beliefs leads to better policies for our state and everyone that lives here. Compromise should not be a dirty word.[8]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
I favor an independent body drawing district boundary in order to minimize political or racial basis.[8]
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
A few week ago, while canvassing I knocked on a door because I was looking for a young lady who lived in the home. The woman who answered the door told me she no longer lived there. I told her that since she answered the door, I would like to introduce myself, I told her I was running for State House Representative and that I would personally like to ask her for her vote. She stated, she was a Republican but she went on to ask me what issues I was running on. I started to tell her about healthcare, when she abruptly asked me if I would come inside her home. I followed her into her kitchen where she showed me a manila folder filled with medical bills. I express my sadness and I told her I would be fighting to expand Medicaid and help to find ways to reduce healthcare cost. She then told me that she would be voting for me.[8]

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Georgia

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.

Click here for an overview of legislative scorecards in all 50 states.  To contribute to the list of Georgia scorecards, email suggestions to editor@ballotpedia.org.
