Donna Brown Newton a resident of Mt. Pleasant where she lives with her son and grandson has devoted the better part of her life to public service. A graduate from Charleston County Public Schools where she has been employed for over 25 years in the office of Guidance and Counseling Service. She received her Bachelor of Science from Southern Wesleyan University. She is a 2018 graduate of Emerge South Carolina, a Democratic women candidate training program. She has served on Charleston County Disability Board for four years and is currently a member of the Charleston County Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee. She has been an activist since she was a teenager when she marched in her first rally for equal pay along with hospital workers in the Nurses’ strike of 1969. She now works with the Snowden Advocacy Group working for basic quality of life in her community to obtain wastewater service for all its residents. She is a strong believer in voting and the right of all citizens to vote.
Women's issues including reproductive choice and passing the Equal Rights Amendment. Also equitable public education.
To represent all of the people in the district and to be beholden to only the constituents and not to powerful individuals. They should try to enact the policies and principals that they campaigned upon.
I would like to leave with a reputation that no matter what challenges I faced, I did all I could for my constituents and the people I represented.
As a teenage I marched in the 1969 Charleston Nurses Strike for pay equality for all nurses in local hospitals. This was a monumental event in the South and we were joined by Coretta Scott King. I was 14 at the time.
Wonder Woman because between the stealth of her invisible jet and her Lasso of Truth she was the power to find out what people are really thinking.
Healthcare and education. If the state does not expand Medicaid we leave many people without health insurance. And this does not just affect their health, but also their educational outcomes. Without healthcare students lose valuable educational time by not being in school because some of the parents can’t take time off without losing their jobs. Children without healthcare miss more time out of school due to the fact they are not receiving regular checkups.
Krystal Matthews. She is a young single mother. She didn’t have experience in politics, but she got elected, learned the job and made a difference. She came in fresh and wasn’t spoiled by a career in politics, but she made a name for herself. I’m impressed by her growth.
It all depends on the situation. Some policies you can compromise on, but others demand that you hold fast. Let's take open carry gun laws for an example. It should not be allowable to carry guns into bars and restaurants.
