Dorothy Wright Nelson is a federal judge on senior status with the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit. She joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. She assumed senior status on January 1, 1995.[1]

Early life and education

Born in San Pedro, California, Nelson graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, with her bachelor's degree in 1950, from the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Law with her J.D. in 1953, and from the University of Southern California Law School with her LL.M. in 1956.[1]

Judicial career

Nelson was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit by President Jimmy Carter on September 28, 1979, to new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629. Nelson was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 19, 1979, and she received her commission the next day. Nelson assumed senior status on January 1, 1995.[1] She was succeeded in this position by Judge Sidney Thomas.
