All seven seats on the Dothan City Schools Board of Education in Alabama were up for election on August 1, 2017. Six seats were up for by-district election and one seat was up for at-large election. Five of the board's seven incumbents vied for additional terms and four were re-elected. Incumbents Brenda Guilford, Franklin Jones, Susan Vierkandt, and Chris Maddox and newcomers Mike Schmitz, Brett Strickland, and Amy Bonds were elected to the board.
District 2 incumbent Franklin Jones, District 3 incumbent Susan Vierkandt, and District 6 incumbent Chris Maddox ran unopposed and were automatically re-elected as of July 10, 2017.[1] In District 1, incumbent Brenda Guilford defeated challenger Donald Hogans. District 4 incumbent Jimmy Addison lost to challenger Brett Strickland. The incumbents for the at-large seat and District 5 did not file for re-election, leaving the seats open. Mike Schmitz, Dothan City's mayor, defeated newcomer Sam Tew in the race for the at-large seat. Newcomers Amy Bonds and Stephanie Butler filed for the District 5 race. Bonds was elected to the seat.[2]

Voter and candidate information
The Dothan City Board of Education consists of seven members elected to four-year terms. Six of the members are elected by district while one member, the Board Chairman, is elected at large. All seven seats were up for general election on August 1, 2017.
School board candidates had to submit paperwork to the Dothan City Clerk's office by June 27, 2017. Each candidate had to be 21 years or older and a resident of the district in which they are running for at least 90 days and cannot be an employee of the district nor have been convicted of crimes of moral turpitude.[3] To cast a ballot in the election, citizens had to register 14 days before the election, or by July 17, 2017.[4] For information regarding voter identification requirements in Alabama, please click here.

The Dothan City school district is located in Houston County in the southeastern corner of Alabama. The county seat is Dothan. The district was the 17th-largest school district in the state in the 2014-2015 school year and served 9,390 students.[7] Houston County was home to 104,193 residents in 2014, according to the United States Census Bureau.[8]
Demographics
Houston County underperformed compared to the rest of Alabama in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 19.7 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 22.6 percent for Alabama as a whole. The median household income in Houston County was $40,948 compared to $43,253 for the entire state. The poverty rate was 18.0 percent compared to 18.6 percent statewide.[8]
