Doug Hattaway is president of Hattaway Communications, a strategic communications firm based in Washington, D.C. He has been president since January 2001.[1] He has worked as a communications specialist for Democratic candidates and public office holders including former Senate majority leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.), former Vice President Al Gore and then-Governor of New Hampshire Jeanne Shaheen.
Career
Doug Hattaway started his political career as a press secretary to U.S. Rep. Andy Ireland, who began his career as a Democratic member of Congress before switching to the Republican party.[2][3] Ireland represented Florida's 8th Congressional District and, later, Florida's 10th Congressional District. After having worked "as a freelance foreign correspondent in South America, the Caribbean and Europe", he served from 1997 to 1998 as campaign spokesman and press secretary for then-Governor of New Hampshire Jeanne Shaheen (D).[4][5][1]
Hattaway served as national spokesman for the Gore/Lieberman 2000 presidential campaign.[6] He also served as Gore's spokesman during the electoral recount in Florida.[4] In 2001, he served as communications director for then-United States Senate majority leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.)[1] In 2001, Hattaway founded his eponymous consulting firm.[1]
In 2006, Hattaway was a consultant to the Deval Patrick (D) gubernatorial campaign in Massachusetts. From January to June 2008, he was senior communications adviser to the Hillary Clinton 2008 campaign for President.[1] He was named an "important figure" in the Washington Post's "WhoRunsGov.com" website.[7] In 2013, Hattaway was named to the list of Top 500 Influencers in American Politics by Campaigns & Elections Magazine,[8] In 2015, Hattaway was named to the board of directors of Results for Development, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that aims to "unlock solutions to tough development challenges that prevent people in low- and middle-income countries from realizing their full potential."[9]
