Montana needs leadership that will look at every angle of a problem that is before the legislature and chose solutions that will benefit most Montanans, making decisions based upon a solid foundation of common sense and financial responsibility. We cannot simply spend our way out of problems. Nor can we ignore those problems and hope they go away. Our job, as citizen legislators, is to take up those problems, propose solutions and come together as a group in enacting those solutions. One reason I am motivated to serve is to reverse a disconcerting trend - that partisan politics is dividing us, not only as a nation, but in our state. It seems like the two sides spend more time glaring at each other than trying to solve our problems. This helps absolutely no one. We need to come together and pass common sense, conservative solutions, using the best ideas from across the political spectrum. If my entrepreneurial background has taught me one thing, it's that you must have a viable business plan or nobody wins - not employees, customers, community, anyone - unless the business is financially stable and cares about the people it serves.

Our goals for Montana should include items like evaluating our state tax structure - does it match the 21st century economy? Are taxes being spent in the best interest of Montanans? How can we best provide tax relief while maintaining essential services? These services will require reasonable tax revenue, which is part of why we should continue to wisely develop our natural resources. At the same time, Montana must make itself more competitive to attract vibrant business investment and the jobs such investment creates. We live in a rapidly evolving world, where markets are now defined globally, not as much locally, and we must be at the forefront - or risk being left far, far behind.
My dad, Dale Mahlum, former Montana State Senator, business owner and horse breeder. He taught me many things, including honesty, persistence and finishing what you have started.
