Doug McCullough was a judge on the North Carolina Court of Appeals. He first served on this court from 2001 to 2008. He lost the 2008 election to Cheri Beasley, but was elected to return to the court in 2010.[1] He was initially set to retire in May 2017 after reaching the mandatory retirement age, but retired on April 24, 2017.

In a statement, McCullough said he retired early to allow Gov. Roy Cooper (D) to appoint his replacement. At the time of his retirement, the legislature was considering overriding Cooper's veto of a bill that would have caused the vacant seat to go unfilled in order to shrink the size of the court.[2]

McCullough died on October 18, 2022.[3]

Education

McCullough received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1967 and his J.D. from the University of South Carolina in 1970.[4]

Career

Prior to his election in 2010, McCullough served on the same court from 2001-2008.[1]

Elections

2010

McCullough was one of 13 candidates who ran to fill the vacancy of James Wynn. This election utilized an instant runoff voting method. After the results were counted, Doug McCullough was leading, with Thigpen in second place. Thigpen requested a recount, which solidified McCullough's win.[5][6][7]
