Gary Johnson (R), Turner founded and operated DW Turner, a public relations firm in Albuquerque, from 1996 to 2012. He then founded Agenda-Global in 2012.[1] Turner was a candidate for Governor of New Mexico in 2010 and faced three opponents in the Republican primary. He lost the primary to Susana Martinez.
Career
Doug Turner's early career in politics was spent with former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson (R). Turner was the campaign director for Johnson in both 1994 and 1998.[2] Turner has also worked as an international affairs fellow with the Council on Foreign Relations in Tokyo.[3]
Turner ran for governor of New Mexico in 2010, an experience he says showed him "you learn how little you know." He told the Albuquerque Journal,
“ | It takes a certain level of insanity matched with ego to get into it in the first place, to think that you could actually run. And you think you have all these great ideas, and you’ve got the answers, and you’re gonna go out there, you’re gonna tell them, and they’re gonna love it. And the reality is you know very little.[4][5] | ” |
As a consultant, Turner founded DW Turner in 1996. This company transitioned into Alliance, LLC in 2012. The firm is based in Albuquerque, N.M., and has offices in Washington, D.C. In 2015, the firm partnered with similar public relations firms around the globe through the Global Communications Alliance, which Turner described as "a way to expand each member’s business and better help clients whose operations often flow across borders."[6]
In 2013, Campaigns and Elections named Turner one of the top 10 influencers in the state of New Mexico. The magazine noted, "He's taken a turn as a candidate and manager in separate gubernatorial contests. Turner knows the campaign and corporate public relations worlds."[7]
