Douglas William Elmendorf (b. in Poughkeepsie, New York) is a former Director of the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).[1] He was first appointed by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and the President pro tempore of the Senate Robert Byrd to finish the term begun by his predecessor Peter Orszag.[2] He was reappointed in January 2011 by John Boehner and Daniel Inouye.[3]

In December 2014, Republican leadership declined to reappoint Elmendorf for a second full term.[4] Keith Hall was named as his successor in February 2015.[5]

Before becoming the Director of the CBO, Elmendorf worked with the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the Federal Reserve, on the Council of Economic Advisors, and in the CBO during the Clinton administration.[6]

Elmendorf was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, and graduated from Princeton University before earning a master's degree and Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University. He remained at Harvard to teach before beginning his political career.[1]
