I attended Louisburg High School before earning my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine and Ph.D. at K-State. After working in R&D to develop new medicines for animals, I moved into the classroom as a university professor in animal health and the life sciences. I am a partner in an animal health company and have deep ties in the community as a youth sports coach, church volunteer, and former school board member. I live in Louisburg, KS with my wife of 12 years and our four children.
  • Give seniors and hardworking Kansans the tax relief they need: We are all facing the mounting pressures of inflation and taxation. I will work to ensure Kansas is a viable place for seniors and those on fixed incomes to live.
  • Rein in utility and healthcare costs: I will work to identify opportunities to help drive costs down. Utility rates are unacceptably high in our state, as are healthcare costs. In addition, we have healthcare deserts throughout the State. Access in well populated areas can be limited. We need to bring positive change to reduce costs and enhance access.
  • Prioritize education funding and boost student success: We need to ensure access to high quality education. This includes prioritizing funding for the public schools, as well as institutes of higher education and technical schools. I am also committed to policy that promotes educational access and improves educational outcomes.
I am particularly passionate about the taxation and regulation, education, public health, and agricultural policy.
My political philosophy is informed and guided by my Catholic faith. Here is a short list of historical figures that provide me inspiration: The Founding Fathers, Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, William Wallace, and Jackie Robinson. I tend to love stories and movies of those who have fought for freedom and made great personal sacrifice.
I believe that humility and gratefulness are vital aspects of an elected official. Leaders must be humble enough to acknowledge their limitations and work with teams for the greater good. As a leader, I am committed to working with interdisciplinary and diverse teams to achieve the best outcomes for the citizens of Kansas.
To protect the rights and interests of the citizens of Kansas.
The first significant historical event I remember was the presidential election of 2000, which was rife with controversy and the Supreme Court intervening to end the Florida recount. However, the most significant early historical event that I recall was the terrorist attacks of September 11th. I was 12 years old at the time.
My first job was when I was four years old assembling brass fittings for my dad's business. I worked in the family business throughout my childhood. My first jobs outside of the business were in college and included being a student tutor and working in the meat processing plant at K-State. My first job out of graduate school was in animal health research and development. I worked in the industry for five years before transitioning to my role in academia.
It should be a collaborative relationship that works to make things better, even when there is partisanship involved.
One significant challenge that impacts several interests is the shifting population dynamics, especially in rural areas of the state. The shifting of tax base and resources will make it difficult to provide essential services in these regions.
Absolutely. Better policy is crafted when legislators build relationships and collaborate well.
Yes, the legislature should have the ability to oversee or limit the use of emergency powers.

Financial transparency of government officials and of government entities is an absolute must. Mechanisms and procedures for government accountability need to be strong and accessible for the public to utilize.

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Kansas

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
