I am a former Peace Corps volunteer and now semi-retired physicians who specialized in the treatmant of HIV/AIDS. I live in rural Rappahannock county. I am concerned with improving the quality of life for residents of District 18 and continuing the dramatic progress that has been made in the in the last two years with Democratic control of the lagislature.
  • Civil rights, for women, minorities LGBT, and improving access to voting
  • Expanding access to medical care
  • The enivonment, addressing climate change
As a physician I am passionate about health care. In 2019 Virginia expanded Medicaid, allowing access to health care for more than a half million Virginians. We must ensure access to care, including mental health and drug and alcohol rehabilitation.
Pete Buttigieg: a smart, articulate, charismatic, openly-gay politician. He has rationally liberal policies which are what we need to move this country forward
Improvement in the lives of all Virginians
The assassination of John Kennedy. I was 13. I was a liberal youngster in a conservative town who idolized Kennedy, and knew then that I wanted to join the Peace Corps (which I did nine years later)
Assistant at a veterinary clinic (cleaning cages, feeding pets, walking dogs). Had it for one summer.
The executive and legislative branches need to work together, but each needs to be a check on the other
Continuing the progressive agenda of the most recent legislative session
A bicameral legislature provides additional input and checks and balances to legislation
Previous experience is necessary for effective governance, put novel input is alsoy7extremely beneficial
Of course it is beneficial to have relationships with other legislators, including those of the other party. That's the only way to make progress.
Redistricting should be nonpartisan and fair, creating logical districts based on geography, not politics
Yes, but only in extreme emergencies and with appropriate oversight
Yes, compromise is important. Although I have strongly held beliefs, I realize that not everyone agrees with me. In order to have functional government there needs to be compromise in order to enact effective laws
