Scorecards

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.

Blackface

In February 2013, Hikind reportedly hosted a party celebrating the Jewish holiday, Purim, for which costumes are traditionally worn. At the party, according to news media accounts, he donned blackface and an Afro wig for his guise as a basketball player, which led to criticism from the Anti-Defamation League, as well as Assembly colleagues including Speaker Sheldon Silver. Hikind apologized in a February 25 news conference, but said that his record showed that he was not a racist and that the costume was in "good taste."[18][19][20]
