Three of the seven seats on the Durham Public Schools school board were up for general election on March 15, 2016. The race for the at-large seat saw two newcomers file for it: Frederick Ravin III and Steve Unruhe. Unruhe secured the at-large seat. District A incumbent Minnie Forte-Brown and newcomer candidate for District B Xavier Cason ran unopposed and won. Write-in votes were allowed.[1]
This marked the second consecutive unopposed election for Forte-Brown. The number of candidates for the Durham school board elections had varied over the last four election cycles. From 2010 to 2016, the district saw five unopposed races and four races with two candidates each; the other five races held during this period saw three or more candidates.
Elections
Voter and candidate information
The Durham school board consists of seven members elected to four-year terms. Six board members are elected by different geographical districts, and one member is elected at large. There was no primary election, and the general election was March 15, 2016. In North Carolina, a runoff is not required in any case unless the second-highest vote recipient calls for one. As no more than two candidates filed for any one seat up for election in this district, a runoff election would not be possible.[2] The District A and B seats were up for election in 2016, along with the at-large seat.
Candidates began to file affidavits of candidacy on December 1, 2015. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was December 21, 2015.[3] Candidates had to pay a filing fee of $96.[1]
