I am a dad, teacher, County Board Commissioner, and an active community volunteer. My wife and I have raised two children in Winona. I have worked and lived in Winona County full-time for about the last 30 years. Working and living full-time in Winona County is incredibly important when it comes to understanding the needs of the people of District 26A. Of the two DFL candidates I am the only one that lives and works full time in Winona County.

I have been a Social Studies Teacher at Winona Senior High School for the last 28 years, teaching civics and history. Every day I work with kids and families that come from a wide range of ethnic and economic backgrounds. I am a former Winona Teacher of the Year and a Top Ten Finalist for the Minnesota State Teacher of the Year Award.

In addition to teaching full-time, I have also been a County Board Commissioner for 10 years. This year I am the County Board Chair. I work with a number of different committees through the County.

I believe leadership is about service to others. I don’t just talk the talk at school, I walk the walk in the community. I volunteer with a wide range of community groups. I have received awards from the American Legion and the Future Farmers of America (FFA).
  • Leadership is about serving others. Public office should be about service, not ambition.
  • A better world is possible. But it won't happen by itself, we need to help make it happen.
  • We face many tough challenges. All of those challenges can be solved if we work together. We need less mud and money in politics. We need more listening and respect. We should listen more than we talk.
Kids, Women's Reproductive Health Rights, Clean Water, and Supporting Working Families.
My parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. They are not rich or famous. They have huge hearts and they care for others.
Serving others. Relationships. Connections to a wide range of people in the community.
I get along with everyone. I value and seek out a wide range of opinions. Service to others. I see the holy/sacred/good in all people.
Listen more than you talk. Seek common ground. Focus on solutions.
I am both excited and worried about the future for my kids, grandkids, and my former students. We must learn to evolve past war and toward a more sustainable future. We could end poverty and hunger in America within 5-10 years. We could end poverty and hunger in the world. A woman anywhere in the world should have basic guaranteed human rights, these include the right to education, a job, and control over her own body.
Non-political - the death of Elvis Presley. 10 years old.

Political - the election of Ronald Reagan. 13 years old.
This is a tough question. I belong to two book clubs. If I had to choose just one...

Non-Fiction = The Second Mountain by David Brooks.

Fiction = The Lord of the Rings trilogy by Tolkien.
Professor Xavier from the X Men. I love to learn what people are thinking and feeling. Humans are fascinating and complex creatures.
I was born and raised on a four generation dairy farm. The farm went bankrupt when I was 9 years old. My family struggled at times when I was younger.
Checks and balances are very important. The Governor, State House, and State Senate should focus on solutions and common ground, not political posturing and sound bites.
Threats to democracy and personal freedom, especially for women's reproductive freedoms. Support for kids at all levels. Clean water. Health care reform.
Absolutely! I have served 10 years on the County Board. Local government is incredibly important and it is also complex. This prepares a person for the State Legislature.
Absolutely! And that includes people from all parties. I believe in building bridges and mending fences. I am a Democrat who is proud to work with cops, clergy, veterans, famers, business leaders and others.
There are many stories about current students, former students, and other community members who are struggling with mental health issues. As a society we have come a long way, but we still have a l long way to go. My last 12 years of teaching has seen a big increase in the rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide among teens. That breaks my heart.
What did one fish say to another when it bumped into a cement wall?

Answer = "Dam!"
Increased funding to make Minnesota one of the best states in terms of the school counselor to student ratio. Right now Minnesota has one of the lowest ratios. Our kids and families need more mental health supports.
As of July 13, 2024: Education Minnesota. Pro-Choice MN. AFL-CIO. MN Nurses Association (MNA), MN Association of Professional Employees (MAPE), Boundary Waters Action Fund and more are pending.

Six different State Senators and Representatives. Senator Heather Gustafson, Senator Mary Kunesh, Rep. Josiah Hill, Senator Clare Verbeten, Rep. Cheryl Youakim, Senator Steve Cwodzinski.

Many local community leaders - former Mayors, School Board members, clergy, law enforcement, teachers, etc.
K-12 Education. Higher Ed. Environment and Farm Policy. Taxes. Local Government. Human Services.
This is incredibly important. I am a High School Social Studies Teacher. I teach classes involving civics and history. I preach these principles at school and I try to live them in public office.
It could be both. It depends on how it is structured. Overall, I am supportive of these programs.
