Judge Dweynie Esther Paul is a Kings County Civil Court judge, elected in 2015. She resides in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Dweynie obtained a dual bachelor’s degree in political science and social science and a master’s degree in public policy from SUNY Stony Brook University. She graduated from George Washington University Law School, Washington D.C.

Dweynie has never wavered from her commitment to the community, having served on Community Board 3 and developing programs and workshops that create greater access to justice. She organized the first annual Community Law Day and annual domestic violence workshops, and founded the Young Men’s Leadership Initiative. She is deacon at Mount Lebanon Baptist Church and secretary of the Judicial Friends Association, which promotes diversity in the courts and supports a pipeline for others entering the legal field.

In 2015, Dweynie became the first person of Haitian-American descent to be elected Civil Court judge in the state of New York. She presided in Family Court, working to strengthen our families. Currently, Dweynie presides over cases in Civil Court with experience, integrity and compassion. This year, she has a unique opportunity to continue to serve Brooklyn residents, but in a different capacity, as a judicial candidate for Kings County Surrogate’s Court. As a Surrogate’s Court judge, Dweynie will fight to preserve the transfer of intergenerational wealth and bridge the gap between the court and the community.
