What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
Community Service, Efficient Service, Advocacy
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I am very passionate about the growing wealth gap in my area and nationwide. I see this as a problem that affects most of us, and it adds to other serious issues.
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
Jimmy Carter has been such a great ex-President. I wish I could be half the man he is.
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
All Quiet on the Western Front is the most influential book I have ever read. That book really showed me that "them" is usually a lot like "us." We are all people and deserving of respect and empathy.
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Honesty and bravery. It can be really hard to stand up for what is right and not what is convenient.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I can be honest to a fault- a quality that is not always easy to have on the campaign trail- and I am a hard-worker. I am running for an administrative job so I think the blue-collar work ethic I bring to the table is important.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
One, the County Treasurer acts as the payment processor for the County. People deserve to be paid quickly. Two, the position should be a watchdog. This position does not decide what to fund, but the Treasurer is in a positon to see where all of the County funds go. Three, I think the Treasurer should do a better job of going out in the community and discussing County finances. Lastly, the Treasurer has a public soapbox and I believe all elected officials have a responsibility to speak out about problems in our area.
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would like to be remembered as an honest and hard-working public servant.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
When I was about 10 we invaded Iraq for the first time and my brother was deployed. I kept up with current events as a young child and was kind of a news junkie even before this, but the Gulf War was a huge deal for my family and one of the first "big deals" of my life.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
My first job was at a grocery store and it lasted all of about a month. We were paid less than minimum wage for a 90 day period and that did not sit well with me.
What happened on your most awkward date?
We went to see Twilight thinking it was a normal vampire movie. We made it about halfway through the movie before leaving.
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
I love Halloween. Dressing up can be a ton of fun, and I am young enough to still enjoy a good party.
What is your favorite book? Why?
All Quiet on the Western Front, as mentioned. I reread it about once a year. Fahrenheit 451 is another favorite. I unfortunately see this book becoming truer all the time- young people seem to be embracing censorship at an alarming rate.
If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?
Probably Jack Ryan- who doesn't want to be a cool spy?
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
Non-living thing- probably my PlayStation.
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Something by Drake- that seems to be all local radio stations have played all year.
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Paying student loans. I am sure most people in my generation can empathize.
Are there any little-known powers or responsibilities held by this office that you believe more people should be aware of?
People are largely unaware of this office due to the low profile of the incumbent. I think this office can be a lot more valuable to County residents if we have a Treasurer that can get out in the community and be visible.
What kind of skills or expertise do you believe would be the most helpful for the holders of this office to possess?
I think the first trait needed is work ethic. This is not a sexy job- it is a working position. Two, I think the Treasurer needs to have enough knowledge of finances to understand the issues, and a drive towards community service so they can share that knowledge.
What qualities does this office possess that makes it a unique and important part of the local government?
Our County Commissioners are very independent, so the Treasurer is in a unique position to act as a watchdog over all of County spending.
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for holders of this office to have previous experience in government or politics?
In government, yes. I am a professional public administrator, a generalist, and I think that will really help me hit the group running if elected. I think having political experience helps on the campaign trail, but may actually be a liability when elected. We need more leaders, not politicians.
