Eamon P. Costello is a judge on the Madison County Court of Common Pleas General/Domestic Relations Division in London, Ohio. He was appointed to the court by Governor John Kasich on October 23, 2013, to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Robert D. Nichols. Costello assumed office on November 1, 2013.[1] Costello was re-elected in 2014, winning the right to serve the remainder of Nichols unexpired term. Costello won re-election to a full six-year term on the court in the general election on November 8, 2016.[2]

Selection method

The 391 judges of the Ohio Courts of Common Pleas are all selected in an identical manner. Qualified individuals wishing to join the bench must participate in partisan primary elections followed by nonpartisan general elections.[3]

The chief judges of the Ohio Courts of Common Pleas are chosen by peer vote and serve for one year.[3]

Qualifications
To serve on an appellate or general jurisdiction court, a judge must be:[3]

  • a district or county resident (for court of appeals and common pleas judges);
  • at least six years practiced in law; and
  • under the age of 70.

Under the Ohio Constitution, a judge who reaches 70 years of age may be assigned by the chief justice to active duty, receiving payment on a per-day basis in addition to whatever retirement benefits he or she is entitled to.

Costello received his undergraduate degree from Wright State University and his J.D. from the University of Toledo College of Law.[1]

Career

From 1996 until his appointment to the Madison County Court of Common Pleas in 2013, Costello served as an assistant prosecuting attorney for the Madison County Prosecutor’s Office.[1]
