The Economic Development Joint Committee was a standing committee of the Kansas State Legislature.

Function

The 2012 Kansas State Legislature rules described the function of this committee as outlined below."

The purpose of the legislative [committee] shall be to:
  • Facilitate the growth, diversification and expansion of existing enterprises and the creation by Kansans of new wealth-generating enterprises;
  • promote economic diversification and innovation within the basic industries and sectors of the state;
  • promote increased productivity and value added products, processes and services among wealth-generating enterprises, and the export of those goods and services created by small and large Kansas enterprises to the nation and world;
  • maintain and revitalize economically depressed rural areas and urban neighborhoods by annually targeting scarce resources by size, sector and location to communities and enterprises of particular need and opportunity, and by working in close collaboration with local communities;
  • protect and enhance the environmental quality of the state in ways consistent with dynamic economic growth; and
  • promote and evaluate workforce development to meet the needs of the economy.[1][2]

Membership

The 2012 Kansas State Legislature rules described the membership of this committee as outlined below."

...shall be composed of five senators and eight members of the house of representatives. The five senate members shall be the chairperson of the standing committee on commerce of the senate, or a member of such committee appointed by the chairperson, two members of such committee appointed by the president and two members of such committee appointed by the minority leader. The eight representative members shall be the chairperson of the standing committee on economic development of the house of representatives, or a member of such committee appointed by the chairperson, four members of such committee appointed by the speaker and three members of such committee appointed by the minority leader.[3][2]
