An effort to recall Mayor Ed Mahaney in Cape May, New Jersey from his position was launched in April 2015.[1] The effort did not go to a vote because supporters failed to turn in enough signatures to bring the recall to a vote.[2]
Recall supporters
Laforet was targeted for recall over the demotion of Robert Sheehan from police chief to captain, which Mahaney voted for in a 3-2 council vote. He was also alleged to have violated the state’s Faulkner Act. The Faulkner Act gives the mayor legislative power but not administrative authority on daily operations.[1]
Path to the ballot
Supporters needed to turn in 481 signatures by mid-August 2015 to move the recall forward.[1] Petitioners fell about 125 signatures short.[2]
