Ed McMullen is a public policy expert operating in the state of South Carolina. He was the South Carolina state director for Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.[1] Previously, McMullen worked for the Heritage Foundation, a 501(c)(3) policy think tank, as well as the South Carolina Policy Council. McMullen is the president of McMullen Public Affairs, a campaign communications firm located in Columbia, S.C.[2]

Career

Ed McMullen has significant experience in public policy think tanks.[2] He began his career at the Heritage Foundation, a nonprofit think tank "whose mission is to formulate and promote conservative public policies based on the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense."[3]

McMullen was also president of the South Carolina Policy Council (SCPC) until 2007.[2] On its website, the SCPC identifies its goal as: "to publish research and analysis showing the relevance of the American republic’s founding principles: limited government, free enterprise, and individual liberty and responsibility."[4] McMullen left the SCPC in 2007 when the group shifted from publishing more traditional reports to a model built on new media[4] As president of the SCPC, McMullen worked with Heritage Foundation as a state contact for their project on School Choice in America.[5]

On February 25, 2015, the Washington Post reported that Ed McMullen would join Donald Trump's organization as an advsior and as South Carolina state director.[6] On June 16, 2015, Trump announced his bid for the presidency at Trump Tower in New York City.[7] McMullen transitioned to the same role on the campaign itself.[1]

Of Trump's candidacy, McMullen said: "I’ve been in public policy all my life and I’ve also run a family business. He’s not a conventional politician, but there’s something really refreshing about a very successful businessman who’s created jobs."[8]
