Campaign themes
2016
Smith's campaign website highlighted the following issues:
“ |
Clean Energy: The first step for creating a sustainable future for the next generation is changing how our communities obtain, use, and pay for energy. That means helping our district obtain energy from cleaner, less expensive, and more renewable and sustainable sources; making smarter energy-use decisions by offering home and business energy audits that reduce energy waste and inefficiency; and bringing communities together to negotiate a fair rate and energy bill with their energy supplier. College Affordability: For years I’ve stood up against the money interests in higher education here at Ohio University, and now I want to take this fight to the state house, where I pledge to change Ohio law and restrict the types of non-instructional mandatory fees and services universities are allowed to require students to pay before students can even begin paying for their own education. Labor Rights: Unionizing is a must to make sure that companies and employers do not forget that they first and foremost depend on their workers, and the state of Ohio needs louder voices in Columbus supporting our labor rights—I want to give our district’s hard workers the representation they deserve in the State House and make sure they keep the seat at the table that they’ve earned with their companies. Small Farmers: This needs to change—to create a sustainable future for the 94th, it is important that Ohio gets behind small family farms and creates a fairer and more business-friendly environment for our farmers so they can earn a living wage and continue creating sustainable jobs in our communities. Environmental Protection: Banning injection wells is the long term political goal, but in the meantime, we need to lift the cap on injection well taxes and designate the tax revenue explicitly for environmental protection and nearby water safety testing. I want to get involved and represent our district because people in our district are sick of having their communities and backyards treated like dumping grounds, and someone needs to speak up in the State House and debunk the myths surrounding gas and oil jobs and safe and responsible fracking.
