This article provides an overview of our approach to selecting stories for Ballotpedia's Daily Presidential News Briefing. The Daily Presidential News Briefing provided a curated account of the day's most important news in the 2020 presidential election.
Stories were included in the Daily Presidential News Briefing because they said something about the candidate, his or her campaign, or the larger narrative of the 2020 presidential election. We did not necessarily select a story for each major candidate each day.
Stories were curated each day from a variety of news sources. When possible, we strove to select stories from neutral, unbiased sources. We did, in certain cases, include stories published by partisan or non-neutral outlets if it was significant and other sources were unavailable.

List of story types
The following types of stories are typically included in the Daily Presidential News Briefing:
- Announcements of new policy positions
- Clarifications of old policy positions
- Comments on world events
- Comments on other candidates
- Noteworthy endorsements
- Campaign staff announcements or changes
- Ad campaigns
- Profiles by major media outlets

Any stories not meeting the above criteria could still be included if they meet our broad criteria of telling readers something about the candidate, his or her campaign strategy, or the larger narrative of the election cycle.

What We're Reading
Each edition of the Daily Presidential News Briefing also featured three news and/or opinion articles under the header What We're Reading.
In this section, we curated historical analysis, academic studies, and political commentary to provide our readers with additional insight into the broader discussions taking place about the presidential election. We sought to capture competing narratives from a multitude of perspectives.
As a result, readers sometimes encountered articles from conservative and/or liberal writers and institutions in this section. While it was not always possible to include all ideological perspectives within a single edition, we sought to balance coverage over time.
Story types we do not include
While not exhaustive, examples of stories we did not include in the Daily Presidential News Briefing were:
- Minor media or cable news appearances
- Celebrity endorsements or comments
- Fact checking articles not published by Ballotpedia
