Hi, I'm Edward.

I hope you're well. My grandfather often bemoans the fact that there are too many career politicians and not enough citizen states[people] stepping up to serve in government. For the last 9 years I've been a stay-at-home Dad of two sons and supportive husband to a wonder of a woman - a caring and wise primary care doctor and mother. I'm a small-business owner/cottage baker. I make some of the best sourdough bread in the East Bay. I'm a parent volunteer leader at Emerson Elementary School. I enjoy running, biking, and learning new things with my sons. They've helped teach me a lot about life, love, and myself. They've also helped hone my negotiation skills (shoutout to the parents out there!). My favorite color is green. I've started doing Ashtanga Yoga on Tuesdays. It's a gift. My last paid job was as a census taker during early COVID and wildfire season in 2020. I was born in Santa Clara, CA. I went to grade school in Salt Lake City, UT, but moved to San Francisco in the late 90's and graduated from George Washington High School in 1999. B.A. Geography (Food Supply/Agriculture) - SFSU - 2009 Nature brings me joy. I believe in the transformative potential of individuals and systems.

Solutions to problems we face together are well within reach.
  • We must invest in our young people - they're your future physicians, musicians, and riffraff. The more we invest in them today, the more good things they'll bring to us 10-20 years down the road. More robustly fund the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Youth Development. Interface with and find more creative ways to support OUSD. Create structures of mentorship, job training in trades, and other systems of support that create a next generation of Oaklanders that feel a sense of agency and pride for the Town that raised them.
  • My connection to City Hall is purely civilian. I have no organizational or notable endorsements and beyond the $1,000 that candidates must pay when they file with the City Clerk, I've spent only a few bucks on this campaign. If elected I will serve as a citizen statesperson, as objectively as I'm able, without formal connections with any of the many political coalitions vying for votes in Oakland today. I am rooted in our North Oakland community.
  • To address public safety and homelessness we must invest more in public infrastructure that nurtures, enlivens, and creates abundance. If/when OPD hires more officers, we must prioritize hiring from within Oakland - people of the community are better equipped keep the peace. We must prioritize staffing our 911 call centers.
Early childhood development. Holistic models of public safety. Sustainable [carbon net zero] development. Education. Housing.
The most important characteristics or principles for an elected official to embody are integrity, honesty, and curiosity.

An elected official, especially for those who hope to represent a diversity of voices in a district of Oakland, must be an excellent listener and communicator. Humility and flexibility.
Grit and a rootness in one's values.
A sense of duty, honor, and great respect for the trust and opportunity to serve one's community.
Self-respect.
Imagination.
The ability to meet people where they are.
Bridge builders.

Leadership.
The core responsibilities of someone elected to this office isn't about what one's beliefs are. The Oakland City Council sets goals and priorities for the City. The council approves the City budget, adopts ordinances to help the City serve its community members, and appoints members to various boards and commissions.
It's my belief that someone elected to this office should carry out the aforementioned duties transparently. A councilmember should be present in the community and regularly available to constituents.
I was 8 years old when the Berlin Wall / the Soviet Union fell.

AIDS pandemic in elementary school, Desert Storm too.
A senior in high school when Columbine happened.

I was 20 on 9/11/2001.
I worked for the better part of a year during high school at Noah's Bagels on San Francisco's Chestnut Street.
In 2016 two of my younger brothers suddenly died in a tragic skydiving plane crash in Kauai. Mourning them while being a stay-at-home parent of my baby son was certainly a struggle. The kukui nut lei I wear is to remember them - Phillip & Marshall Cabe - and to remind myself that every day is an unpromised gift.
Not necessarily. If a City Council is a single body with 8 heads, I see great value in one of those heads being an average citizen without political connections.
I'm a people person. I care. I'm driven by a desire to push Us toward a more decent and hopeful future.
I'm earnest and open and have navigated some pretty choppy waters in my life. My trials and tribulations have made me more resilient and knowledgeable about myself. I'm rooted in my values, but flexible. My sons have helped me become a more patient negotiator...most of the time.
Our collective municipal wealth is budgeted and spen
