Edward Thaxter Gignoux (1916-1988) was the ninth federal judge in the United States District Court for the District of Maine. He joined the court in 1957 after an appointment from Dwight D. Eisenhower. At the time of appointment, Gignoux was a private practice attorney in Portland, Maine. He assumed senior status on June 1, 1983 and served until his death on November 4, 1988.[1]

Early life and education

Gignoux graduated from Harvard College with an A.B. in 1937 and from Harvard Law School with an LL.B. in 1940.[1]

Military service

From 1942 to 1946 Gignoux served in the United States Army.[1]

Professional career

After law school, Gignoux began a career in private practice. He worked in Buffalo, New York from 1940 to 1941; Washington, D.C. from 1941 to 1942; and Portland, Maine from 1946 to 1957.[1]

Judicial Career

District of Maine

Gignoux was nominated to the court by Dwight D. Eisenhower on August 9, 1957 to fill the seat vacated by John D. Clifford. The U.S. Senate confirmed him on August 22, 1957, and he was commissioned on August 26, 1957. He served until his death on November 4, 1988.[1] Gignoux was succeeded by Gene Carter.

Awards and assocations

Gignoux was the 1986 recipient of the Edward J. Devitt Distinguished Service to Justice Award.
