Edwin H. Stern was serving as an interim justice on the New Jersey Supreme Court when he reached the mandatory retirement age in 2011. He was appointed to that position by Chief Justice Stuart Rabner.[1]
Prior to this temporary appointment, Stern served on the New Jersey Superior Court, Appellate Division, Part H. He became an appellate judge on September 1, 1985 and became the Presiding Judge of Part H on September 1, 1998. His mandatory retirement date is in 2011.[2]
Education
Judge Stern graduated from Rutgers University in 1963 and from Columbia University Law School in 1966. He is now married and has three grown sons.[3]
Career
Judge Stern began his legal career as a law clerk to a judge on the Appellate Division. From 1967 to 1970, he worked as a private practice lawyer. He then joined the Hudson County prosecutor's office, where he worked as a first assistant (1970-1973) and then an acting prosecutor (1973-1974). After that, he worked as the director of criminal practice in the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) until 1977. He then worked as a deputy attorney general in the Department of Law and Public Safety until 1980, when he returned to the AOC. He worked there as the assistant director for legal services until Governor Byrne appointed him to the Superior Court in 1981.[2][3]
