Two seats on the Effingham County Board of Education were up for general election on May 20, 2014 for Districts 1 and 4. District 1 candidate Robert Grant was unopposed and elected by default. Four candidates vied for the District 4 seat, with Elizabeth Helmly coming out on top.

Effingham County Schools is located in Effingham County, Georgia. The county seat of Effingham County is Springfield. Effingham County is home to 52,250 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] Effingham County Schools was the 32nd-largest school district in Georgia, serving 11,559 students students during the 2013-2014 school year.[2]

Demographics

Effingham County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Georgia in terms of higher education achievement and overperformed in terms of median household income in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 16.9 percent of Effingham County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 27.8 percent for Georgia as a whole. The median household income in Effingham County was $62,953 compared to $49,604 for the state of Georgia. The poverty rate in Effingham County was 10.6 percent compared to 17.4 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Effingham County Board of Education consists of five members elected to four-year terms. They serve by geographic district. There was no primary election and the general election was held on May 20, 2014 for two seats. Three seats will be up for election in 2016.[4]

Candidates began to file affidavits of candidacy on March 3, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was March 7, 2014.[5]

Additional elections on the ballot

The school board election shared the ballot with county, state and national primary elections on May 20, 2014. Effingham County residents voted in elections for county commission, magistrate judge, solicitor general and state court judge. The primary ballot included races for Georgia House of Representatives and Georgia State Senate. There was also state executive elections including races for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general. The May 20, 2014, election also selected candidates for seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate.[6]
