This is my first time running for office, but I've been following current events for the past few years and have become concerned about the threat to democracy we're facing. My opponent has aligned herself with our current Governor and appears poised to adhere to those policies rather than be attuned to the will of the people.

I'm currently retired but have worked in publishing (writing, editing and graphic art) for over 40 years, first as an employee and later self-employed. I have a personal ethic to serve those outside the four walls of my home and have given my time for many years as part of a church community and after retirement as a volunteer for a food rescue organization.

I love life in small-town Kalona, Iowa, where we moved from the Twin Cities over 20 years ago. My husband retired from a career in information technology and then was an adjunct professor at the local community college. He was raised on a farm in Southwest Minnesota, and he and his family remain co-owners. We have one married son and two grandsons.
  • Keep public funds in public schools. Restore Iowa's reputation for top-quality education.
  • Strengthen communities to attract skilled workers and encourage families to grow and remain.
  • Ensure safe communities by preserving firearm measures. Vote No on Public Measure #1, which could erode current measures.
Areas of public policy I'm passionate about are voting rights, reproductive rights, a living wage, child care and family and sick leave, firearms safety, teacher pay and public school funding, and quality of education.
My heroes these days are people like Mallory McMorrow, who stand up for democratic values but know how to listen and bridge differences. And although I don't agree with their positions, I also admire people like Liz Cheney, Adam Kinzinger, and Rusty Bowers, who tell the truth even at personal cost.
Qualities I believe would make me a successful officeholder are ability to listen and consider all sides of an issue, empathy, ability to work hard, belief in the value of serving those around me.
The legacy I'd like to leave is that I used the gifts I have to make the world a better place.
When President Kennedy was assassinated, I was ten years old. Even at a young age I knew it was terrible. I was particularly moved by photos of his children at the funeral.
My very first job was as a Candy Striper, volunteering in the hospital where I was born. I scrubbed basinets and made beds so tight that quarters would bounce off the sheets.
Emma, by Jane Austen is one of my favorite books. It shows complexity of relationships and the frailty of human nature and has subtle, biting humor.
