Eileen Bransten
Eileen Bransten was a justice for the New York County Supreme Court, Civil Term in the 1st Judicial District of New York. She was elected to this position in 2000, after serving on this court as an acting justice from 1996 to 1999.[1] She retired in December 2018.[2]
Biography
Bransten began her career in 1965 as the director of research for political campaigns. She worked in this capacity until 1969. She also worked (prior to receiving her law degree) as: a senior research analyst for the Style and Arrangement Committee of the New York State Constitutional Convention (1967), a correspondent for the New York Law Journal (1967-68), director of research and public relations for the NYS Senate Minority (1970-73) and an executive assistant and director of research, writing and legislation for the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council of the New York City Mayor's Office.
Bransten received her B.A. from Hunter College of the City University of New York in 1975. She then received a J.D. from Fordham Law School in 1979.[1]
Bransten began her legal career in 1978 as a student assistant for the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Southern District of New York. In 1980, she became an assistant Queens County district attorney. After four years in this position, she moved to the private practice, working as a sole practitioner until 1992. She then worked as principal court attorney to Supreme Court Justice Jacqueline Silbermann until 1994. That year, she was elected judge of the New York City Civil Court. She left this position in 1996 to become an acting justice of the supreme court..[1]
