Eileen J. Goggin is a judge for the Nassau County District Court in New York.[1] Goggin won the seat in the general election on November 8, 2016. She ran on the Democratic, Green, Working Families, and Women's Equality party tickets.

Goggin also ran for the Nassau County District Court in 2014.[2]

Education

Goggin received her undergraduate degree from Adelphi University and her J.D. from Brooklyn Law School.[3]

Career

Goggin was appointed in February 2013, and elected in November 2013, to the Long Beach City Council. She is also the chief legal counsel to Judge Tammy S. Robbins of the Nassau County Court. She was previously a deputy county attorney in Nassau County. She began her career in law in the criminal defense division of the New York City Legal Aid Society. There she served as senior trial attorney and trial trainer supervisor. Goggin has also held the position of government affairs associate with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.[3]

The filing deadline for candidates who wish to run in this election was July 14, 2016.[4] Incumbent Helen Voutsinas and Eileen J. Goggin defeated Dennis McDermott and incumbent David W. McAndrews in the general election for two open seats on the Nassau County District Court.

Primary: She was successful in the Independence primary on September 9, 2014, receiving 13.4 percent of the vote. She competed against Robert E. Pipia, Darlene D. Harris, Fred J. Hirsh, Tricia Ferrell, C. William Gaylor, Ignatius L. Muscarella and Michael A. Ciaffa. Additionally, she ran on the Democratic party line, though there was no primary for that party. 
General: She was defeated in the general election on November 4, 2014, after receiving 12.3 percent of the vote. She competed against Robert E. Pipia, Darlene D. Harris, Fred J. Hirsh, Tricia Ferrell, C. William Gaylor, Ignatius L. Muscarella and Michael A. Ciaffa for four open seats. [2][5]

Judges of the New York District Courts are each elected to six-year terms in partisan contested elections. They face reappointment at the end of each term. To serve on this court, a judge must be a state and county resident, at least 18 years old and practice in the state for 10 years. This court has a mandatory retirement age of 70 years old.[6][7]
