Eileen MacEnery was a 2012 Democratic candidate for District 44 of the California State Assembly. She is a single mother from Newbury Park.[1]

Issues

Policy Positions

MacEnery has expressed support for the Our Children, Our Future initiative. She also wants to focus transportation dollars on mass transit and buses rather than highways.[1]

Incumbent's Absence

MacEnery has criticized incumbent Jeff Gorell (R) for his absence from the legislature while serving in the Navy. Gorell is a reservist who was called up around the time of his election. He continued to hold his seat in the legislature even though he was in Afghanistan; fourteen bills were introduced in his name when he was on his year-long tour of duty.[1]

Of Gorell's decision to stay in office, MacEnery was quoted[1] as saying:

"I’m tired of people of (this district) and East Ventura County not being represented by either party. Jeff Gorell is a decent, honorable, ethical person. He was called to Afghanistan and had a lot more things on his mind. The (issue) is not why he vacated office, it’s that he did vacate office. Proper procedure wasn’t followed. (The 37th District) was left without representation. To me, this is a violation of the oath of office."
