Elaine M. Bushfan is a former superior court judge for the 14th Judicial District of the Third Division of the Superior Court, serving Durham County in North Carolina from 2010 to 2018.[1]

The North Carolina Superior Courts are split into five divisions and 48 districts. Superior court judges rotate among the districts within their division every six months.[2] However, superior court judges are elected by voters in their district and must reside in the district in which they are elected.[3]

Education

Bushfan received both her B.S. in mathematics in 1984 and her J.D. in 1991 from North Carolina Central University.[4][5]

Career

Before becoming superior court judge, Bushfan served as a district court judge for the14th Judicial District from 1994 until 2010. In 2002, she became the first woman appointed as chief judge of the district court, and upon her election to the Superior Court in 2010, she also became the first female resident superior court judge in Durham. Prior to her judicial career, Bushfan worked in private practice from 1991 to 1994.[4][6]

2010 election

Bushfan was elected to the Superior Court in the North Carolina 14th Judicial District. She won election in a six-way race, winning 24.98 percent of the vote.[7]
