I'm not your typical candidate for this office. I'm a young queer woman, a blue collar worker, and my family has lived here for generations. I've been active in politics advocating for progressive change my whole adult life. I've seen the climate crisis, the housing crisis, and the crisis of our democracy get worse and worse, and come to a head last year. Our town was ravaged by Helene, a result of the climate crisis, leaving so many homes destroyed. At the same time, this country elected a President running on hate and lies, against the wishes of the vast majority of my neighbors. We protest the administration every week here, and we need leaders who will stand up to the chaos and corruption in our government today.
  • Build more houses. Our town is projected to grow massively over this term, and we need to take advantage of this boom while ensuring that what we add incorporates what makes Weaverville great. We value walkability and green space here, and I would make sure new projects consider those aspects.
  • Fix the traffic. Congestion is getting worse and worse, and we need local elected officials who will tirelessly lobby NCDOT and our state representatives to find and fund solutions. We also need to work with the City of Asheville on finally getting connected to the bus network.
  • Stand up for Weaverville. I will make sure that there is no cooperation between WPD and ICE, who have already begun detaining Buncombe County residents outside of courthouses. In Weaverville we believe in diversity, tolerance, and peace. We rejected Trump's hate and division at the ballot box last year, and we need representatives who will stand up to him for the next three years.
I'm personally very passionate about housing policy. The house my grandparents bought when they moved here is worth one hundred times what it was when they bought it. Wages have not gone up by that much, and we've seen young people delay starting families because they can't afford to get into the housing market.
I would like to be remembered as someone who made a difference in my community for others who couldn't. My upbringing in the First Baptist Church of Weaverville and my faith teach me that the way to serve God is by serving those less fortunate than you. I come from a long line of teachers and growing up I learned the value of public service and the impact it can have on people's lives.
I think it would be important to have at least one member of the Council who has been educated in this century. We are rapidly growing as a town, and the young professionals moving here should have a voice. We need someone on the Council who sees the cost of housing not as the price of their asset, but as an urgent crisis affecting the next generation.
