A censure is the formal way in which a legislative chamber can express disapproval of the words or actions of a legislator. At the state level, it may be accompanied by other actions such as the legislator being removed from committee assignments, but on its own, a censure stands solely as a symbolic rebuke from the chamber. As of April 2025, Ballotpedia has tracked 33 cases in which elected officials were censured by state legislative chambers between 1838 and 2025. These officials include 12 Democrats, 14 Republicans, and seven members of other parties.[1][2]

The map and list below only include cases in which a member of a state legislature was censured by a resolution passed through a vote in the relevant chamber. It does not included cases of unsuccessful censures.
