ATLANTA, Georgia: The day came and went for Georgia voters and Referendum 1. Polls opened today at 7:00 a.m. EST for the July 31 state primary election and, while there are other local measures on the ballot, there is one question which will be put before all voters in the state.
Referendum 1 is commonly known as T-SPLOST, which stands for Transportation Special-Purpose Local-Option Sales Tax, and the measure will raise sales tax by one percent in each region that votes to approve it. What makes Referendum 1 different from statewide measures in the past is that, although the entire state votes on it, only those districts that approve it will see the tax increase. The state has been divided into a total of 12 districts for the purpose of this measure.
