2025

In 2025, Kansas lawmakers enacted 12 election-related bills. Some of the bills changed absentee ballot deadlines, proposed a constitutional amendment to voters clarifying voter eligibility, implemented new requirements regarding voter citizenship verification, and prohibited ranked-choice voting.

  • SB 4 moves up the deadline for election officials to receive a mailed ballot to 7 p.m. in order for the ballot to be counted. Previously, ballots were valid if they were postmarked by Election Day and received within three days of Election Day.
  • HCR 5004 refers a question to the 2026 general election ballot for voters to decide whether to adopt a constitutional amendment that would establish that only a person who is a United States citizen is eligible to vote in Kansas.
  • HB 2020 requires the director of the division of motor vehicles to provide a quarterly report to the secretary of state to verify the citizenship of voters and voter registration applicants. It also requires officials to notify anyone removed from the voter rolls due to an unverified or disputed citizenship status.
  • SB 6 prohibits ranked-choice voting in federal, state, and local elections.
