Analysis
2025
In 2025, Wisconsin lawmakers passed one election-related bill. The bill, SJR2, was the second consideration of a ballot initiative referral to create a constitutional amendment to require voter ID to vote in any election. Wisconsin voters approved the amendment on April 1, 2025.
2024
In Wisconsin, five election-related bills were passed in 2024. Three of those were legislatively referred constitutional amendments regarding provisions for noncitizen voting, voter identification, and private funding of election administration that passed their second consideration and were submitted to voters for ratification or rejection at upcoming elections.
- SJR 71 prohibits noncitizens from voting in any election in the state. It was approved by Wisconsin voters in the 2024 fall general election on November 5.
- SJR 73 requires photo identification to vote in any election in the state. The amendment was voted on in the 2025 spring general election on April 1.
- SJR 78 prohibits any level of government in the state from applying or accepting non-governmental funds or equipment for election administration. It was approved by Wisconsin voters in the 2024 spring general election on April 2.
