I'm a life-long Kansas resident: married with grown children and grandmother to one granddaughter. I was raised in Johnson County, was a resident of Wyandotte County for more than 40 years before moving to Miami County where I have resided for the past 7 years. My faith and strong family values have provided me with the foundation of who I am today. Personal experiences have afforded me insight, understanding and compassion for those of lesser means. I pride myself in having a strong work ethic and have always demonstrated a commitment to doing every job to the best of my ability. Having worked in a wide variety of industries over the years (union and non-union) I also have appreciation for all professions, especially skilled workers and service providers.
  • We are living in a world that is ever changing and it's important for us to be able to stay globally competitive and ahead of the curve. Providing quality education to our children is critical to their acquiring the skills needed to live a prosperous life following graduation, whether they elect to continue their education or pursue a skill that is critical to our everyday lives. Adequate funding is essential to retain exceptional educators and provide teachers and students with the tools that are needed to succeed. School funding (including funding for Special Education) should be guaranteed and not an issue for debate.
  • Individual liberties, whether that of women's reproductive and healthcare rights or the rights and protection of members of the LGBTQ+ communities should be codified into law. Efforts to encourage tolerance, acceptance, and understanding for all should be promoted, rather than wasting time, energy, and tax payer dollars to penalize individuals and healthcare providers and facilities. All individuals deserve the right and freedom to make personal decisions regarding their own bodies without direction, restriction, and input from the government.
  • The expansion of Medicaid and mental healthcare facilities and service providers are critical to improving the quality of life for Kansans across the state. Not having access and adequate resources for appropriate care costs all of us more in the long run, as untreated medical issues may become exasperated. Rural communities are currently going without services and expectant mothers are needing to drive more than an hour each way for prenatal and delivery care. The expansion of Medicaid would create jobs and return tax payer dollars directly to communities rather than Kansas tax dollars being allocated to other states. Expansion of these much needed services would result in communities becoming stronger, healthier and more sustainable.
I am personally passionate about public policy related to education, health care, individual liberties and gun safety. I believe that policy should bring about positive change, improve efficiencies, and financial savings to tax payers no matter the topic at hand. In doing so, we should strive to work towards improving the quality of life for our residents of all ages.
I believe that the characteristics that are most important of an elected official are integrity, interpersonal skills, empathy, and commitment. Integrity can be gauged by one's honesty and ability to do what is right, and take responsibility for one's actions. Communicating well with the public, constituents, and staff is critical, as well as interactions while working collaboratively with members of all parties. By demonstrating empathy, elected officials can build relationships with the community in which they serve and with colleagues across the aisle. An official's commitment can be demonstrated by their involvement in their community and their attendance and voting record while serving.
The qualities that I possess include attention to detail, a strong work ethic, and grace, understanding, and compassion for those of limited means.
I believe the core responsibilities of an elected official are to introduce bills, resolutions, and amendments that would improve the quality of life for their constituents, create efficiencies in processes, use tax dollars effectively and lower taxes as often as feasible.
I would like my legacy to be that I tried my best to make a positive difference in this world.
The first historical event that I can remember was the assassination of President John F. Kennedy when I was 9 years old. I remember being in grade school, and the principal making the announcement over the intercom. I attended a parochial grade school, so we all stood to say a prayer for the President.
My very first job was working at my father's restaurant while I attended a technical school to become a dental assistant. I believe that I worked there for approximately a year or so.
I have continually struggled with my weight. I was a hefty child growing up and the pounds have continued to come and go over the years. Some years the pounds came more easily than others!
The ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature would include communication and networking forums, i.e., breakfast or dinner meetings that would afford an opportunity for ideas to be exchanged, and issues resolved rather sooner than later.
One of the greatest challenges that Kansas will face over the next decade is the ability to grow the economy while minimizing corporate tax incentives. Kansans are struggling to keep up with inflation while taxes on property have skyrocketed. It is hard for individuals to understand the role that upfront tax incentives play on communities long-term sustainability.
I do not believe that having previous experience in government and politics is necessarily beneficial to legislators. One's education and acquired skills, while working in industries outside of politics, can be utilized and adapted to government and political settings. Personal experiences can bring different insight and perspective to issues at hand.
Building relationships and mutual collaboration are critical in creating and implementing effective legislation. It's important to be able to identify common grounds, understand differences, and work towards reaching goals that maximize the outcome for all involved.
So many of President Obama's attributes are so inspiring, while challenging to emulate to the degree in which he mastered them. His ability to communicate his conviction and confidence in the strength of America and its people, while not giving false hope or overstating promises, was a factor in his ability to unite instead of divide. His extraordinary compassion for those who had experienced loss and despair was genuine. He always acknowledged those that had paved the road before him and promoted the potential in everyone to do great things not only for themselves but for others. He regularly expressed appreciation to those around him and his gracious demeanor and humility made him approachable and welcoming to all, no matter of status, age or position. It's these same qualities and attributes that I will successfully demonstrate to colleagues and constituents while representing and serving the fine people of District 6 and the State of Kansas.
I do not have any aspirations of running for a different political office in the future at this time.
While door knocking, I had the opportunity to meet a retired teacher who was interested in improving standards for education. As she continued to read my walk card, her disposition became saddened and she asked me about my thoughts on mental health. She continued to share a story regarding her adult sister who had been clinically diagnosed as having schizophrenia. Her eyes teared and she shared the challenges of the current mental health system when dealing with family members who are adults. She had recognized that her sister was in crisis and could not get help. She reached out to the police, and was told that the only way that they could get involved was if her sister committed a crime. She was unsuccessful in getting her sister help that day. Consequently, her sister did get into trouble. An unfortunate end to a situation that could have been avoided or prevented if guidelines and processes were improved.
Knock, knock. Whose there? Lettuce. Lettuce who? Lettuce in! Jokes like this make my 6 year old granddaughter giggle.
I would need more information regarding this issue before I could comment.
The first bill that I would introduce would be to eliminate the option to bundle bills. I believe that every bill should stand on its own and not be intertwined with other bills.

Financial transparency is essential to ensuring that an elected officials actions are not being wrongfully influenced by outside PAC's or individuals.
I believe the state ballot initiative process can be good for the state as it affords registered voters the opportunity to speak their voice on a specific matter.
