Background

Col. Eli Lilly in 1885

Eli Lilly and Company (LLY) was founded in 1876 by Civil War veteran Colonel Eli Lilly. He founded LLY in Indianapolis, Indiana, where the company is headquartered. The company began its pharmaceutical research division in 1886.[1] In 1923, LLY introduced the first commercial insulin product. The company collaborated with the University of Toronto and Harvard University early on in the twentieth century. Both the insulin research project and the later pernicious anemia research project yielded Nobel prizes.[4][1][5]

In the 1940s, LLY began mass producing penicillin, and in the 1950s began antibiotic research, resulting in the production of vancomycin and erythromycin.[1] In 1982, LLY introduced a new insulin, Humulin, that replicated the insulin produced by the body.[1] Also in the 1980s, LLY introduced Prozac, a drug used to combat clinical depression.[1]

As of August 2025, the company's website says its mission is based on Eli Lilly's statement: "Take what you find here and make it better and better."[6]
