Elizabeth Berlin served as the interim New York Commissioner of Education from January 2015 until July 6, 2015, when her successor MaryEllen Elia was appointed commissioner.[1] Berlin was the first woman to lead the New York Department of Education. On December 11, 2014, former commissioner John King announced he was resigning from his role as commissioner to join the U.S. Department of Education as a senior advisor. As the executive deputy commissioner, Berlin was next in succession for the position of commissioner when former commissioner King resigned.[2][3]
