My name is Elizabeth Bulthuis and I am running to represent Colorado House District 47. I grew up in Golden proud alumn of Jeffco pubilc schools. I earned my BA at Fort Lewis College in Durango. My partner, Eric, and I have been married for 26 yrs and we have an amazing 25 year old daughter. Colorado is my home. I have lived elsewhere, but have returned and found our familie's forever home in La Veta.

I am a huge proponent of Public Schools. I will always fight for a woman's right to bodily autonomy and choice. I am all for bringing back the assault weapon ban and finding the right safety measures for legal gun ownership. We need to defend and uplift our LBGTQ+ communities. I have absolutely no tolerance for racism or discrimination of ANY kind. I am running for office because I believe our vast and unique district is mis-understood in our state capital. We need a voice in The Colorado General Assembly to advocate for our rural communities. Everything fom water to fossil fuel extraction, to climate change. We also have our small urban hubs and municipalities that have their own troubles including poverty, substance abuse and crime.

I believe that the divisiveness in out politics and government have pulled us backwards. We are different in Rural Colorado. We are a communities that work together to acheive common goals. We are neighbors that will do anything we can to help each other. I want to bring these values back.
  • I will stand up for every person in House District 47. I want to find that bridge over the urban/rural divide. We need each other and I believe we can accomplish our goals if we listen and compromise. I have no special interests other than the people of our district and improving our way if life.
  • Water!!! We have got to protect our water. Keep it safe and clean. Keep it here for OUR Agricultural and Urban communities. Find a way for water rights owners to keep their rights and still profit in real time.
  • Our Public Schools. We need to get our kids involved again. It's going to take funding but I will fight tooth and nail to get it. Bring back wood shop, home ec., let our kids explore their interests and persue what they are passionate about. This requires teachers. We have to pay them! I do NOT believe that public funds should be allocated to private schools.
Equal Human Rights FOR ALL!!! A woman's right to choose. Sensible gun reform. Environmental protection.
My Father, Dr. Scott Harvey PHD. He was a man of integrity. He taught us compassion, honesty, dedication. His family was everything and he made sure we knew it. He lived his life quietly, yet had such a strong voice. He taught us that every human life is valuable. When a family member came out of the closet, he said "Good for him! Couldn't love him more". He saw racism as a cancer. And he was a die hard Democrat.
One of my favorite books is Obama's "The Audacity of Hope". I do believe in our inherent goodness. I do love The West Wing(TV) and An American President (Film). Growing up I remember there being arguments and heated discussions on policy and governance in politics, but there was always a sense of civility and mutual respect. Those days seem to be gone, I want them back.
I was raised a moderate Democrat. I was taught to have discussions with people. Especially those that I do not agree with. Because how can I possibly communicae my views if I don't understand theirs.

I believe that the extremists - on BOTH sides - are making it impossible to even attempt policy discussions.

Anyone who wants to represent their community must possess certain qualities. COMPASSION AND EMPATHY: you are elected to help your constituents. That means knowing why they are hurting and understanding how they are effected. HONESTY: feels like that should go without saying. The truth is hard to tell when it is not good news. But that is a legislator's job. INTEGRITY: Walk the walk and talk the talk. Lead by example. INCLUSION: every single person in YOUR district, county, state etc., should be heard and represented.
I will legislate with integrity and inclusion. I will listen and be honest. I pride myslef with excellent communication skills and have the passion to fight for us.
Meeting with our local communities to discuss our needs and wants. Being available to all constituents to listen. Communicating the needs of our district to our State Capital. Bringing home whatever news is pertinent to us. Then, fight like heck to get our needs met!
A safe, healthy, unified world for our future generations.
The Challenger Space shuttle. We were all in the library at Golden HS watching on that 20 inch monitor they rolled in on the AV cart. Still feels like it wasn't real.
Denny's. I was a Mother Butler Pie Hostess.
Cat's Cradle - Vonnegut It's fascinating and terrifying. It's such an interesting look at human nature.
I do, experience is always a good thing. I also think that the balance of fresh eyes and open hearts with the experienced (and not necessarily jaded) legislators is healthy.
Absolutely. Nothing gets done if we can't gain an understanding of each other.
Have you heard about the new corduroy pillows?
- They're making headlines. :)
