Elizabeth Martin was a judge for the Pierce County Superior Court in Washington. She was appointed on May 11, 2010, by Governor Chris Gregoire to fill the seat vacated by Lisa Worswick.[1] Martin filed for re-election in 2016 and won automatically because she faced no challengers. She retired from the court on November 1, 2021.[2]
Education
Martin received her B.A. in American studies from the College of Idaho and her J.D. from Willamette University College of Law.[1]
Career
Martin practiced law with Gordon Thomas Honeywell LLP from 1983 until her judicial appointment in 2010. She also served as a pro tem judge for the Pierce County Superior Court from 2003-2005.[1]
Elections
2016
Washington held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. Candidates for district and superior court seats had to file for election by May 20, 2016. Primary elections were held on August 2, 2016, for six seats where more than two candidates filed for election.
Martin won re-election without appearing on a ballot in 2016 because no challengers emerged by the May 2016 filing deadline.[3] In counties with a population that is greater than 100,000, if only one superior court candidate files for election for a judgeship, that candidate is automatically elected and the county does not hold a general election for the seat. According to the 2010 census, the following counties have a population greater than 100,000:[4]
2012 evaluation
The Tacoma-Pierce County Bar Association placed Martin as 22nd out of the 22 Pierce County judges, giving her a 93.9 percent positive rating.[5]
2010
Martin was re-elected after running unopposed.[6]
