Elizabeth A. Pickett (independent) is a judge for the 1st District of the Louisiana 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal. She assumed office in 1997. Her current term ends on December 31, 2032.

Pickett (independent) won re-election for the 1st District judge of the Louisiana 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal outright in the primary on November 8, 2022, after the primary and general election were canceled.

Pickett changed her partisan affiliation from the Democratic Party to independent in 2020.[1]

Education

Judge Pickett was born in Sabine Parish. She graduated from Tulane Law School in 1984. When she was first elected to the 11th District Judicial Court in 1990, she replaced her father, who was the second of three generations that have served in Louisiana courts.[2][3]

Career

From 1984 to 1990, Judge Pickett ran a private law practice in Sabine. She also served as an Assistant District Attorney for the 11th Judicial District Court. When her father retired from judging on the 11th Judicial District, she ran for his seat. She was elected a District Judge in 1990 and held that position until 1997.[2][3]

Louisiana elections use the majority-vote system. All candidates compete in the same primary, and a candidate can win the election outright by receiving more than 50 percent of the vote. If no candidate does, the top two vote recipients from the primary advance to the general election, regardless of their partisan affiliation.

Nonpartisan primary election

The primary election was canceled. Elizabeth A. Pickett (Independent) won the election without appearing on the ballot.

2012

Pickett was re-elected after running unopposed in 2012. [4]
