Elizabeth Trosch (Democratic Party) is a judge of the North Carolina District Court District 26 Seat 11. She assumed office in 2009. Her current term ends on December 31, 2028.

Trosch (Democratic Party) ran for re-election for judge of the North Carolina District Court District 26 Seat 11. She won in the general election on November 5, 2024.

Trosch was appointed as Chief Judge for Judicial District 26 on February 28, 2020, officially taking the post on April 1, 2020 following the retirement of former Chief Judge Regan A. Miller.[1]

Biography

Elizabeth Trosch received her B.A. in philosophy and social psychology from Hollins College in 1998 and her J.D. from the Wake Forest University School of Law in 2002.[2]

Selection method

The North Carolina District Courts utilize partisan elections in the selection of judges. District judges serve four-year terms, after which they must run for re-election if they wish to continue serving. From 2002 through 2016, elections for district court judges were nonpartisan; however, on March 23, 2017, the North Carolina legislature changed the method of election to partisan elections by overriding Gov. Roy Cooper's veto of HB 100. This change was effective with the 2018 district court elections.[5][6][7]

Qualifications
To serve on this court, a judge must be:[5]

  • licensed to practice law in the state;
  • a district resident; and
  • under the age of 72 (retirement at 72 is mandatory).
